Reserve only the meals that would genuinely shape your trip, and use the restaurant's direct channel first. Japan has no universal restaurant-booking platform or release window. A table may be sold online, requested by phone, handled by a hotel concierge, released in monthly batches or made available after a cancellation. Confirmation, deposits and cancellation charges differ by restaurant.
For ordinary meals, keep a neighbourhood shortlist. For a destination restaurant or themed café, read the official policy before planning the day around it.
Four legitimate ways to reserve a restaurant in Japan
Start on the restaurant's own website. Look for a named official booking partner, direct form, telephone number or hotel restaurant page. A third-party page appearing first in search is not proof that the restaurant authorises it.
| Channel | Best use | What proves confirmation | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct online booking | Restaurants with a live calendar and written conditions | Confirmation page/email and reservation record | A “request sent” screen may not confirm a table |
| Direct telephone | Restaurants such as Den that explicitly require a call | The restaurant's stated confirmation step | Calling hours are Japan time; unofficial agents may be rejected |
| Hotel concierge | When the restaurant accepts hotel-arranged reservations | Written confirmation relayed by the hotel | The concierge cannot override availability or policies |
| Named official partner | When linked by the restaurant itself | Booking in the authorised platform | Check deposits, service charges and cancellation terms |
Telephone-only does not mean “foreign visitors cannot book”. It means the restaurant has chosen a direct communication channel. Prepare the date, time, party size, lead guest name, reachable phone number and all dietary needs. Confirm whether the call created a booking or only a request. Den, for example, states that its direct phone booking is complete when its confirmation email arrives and that it does not authorise online intermediaries.
For phone-only venues, a Japanese-speaking hotel concierge may help if the hotel offers the service and the restaurant accepts it. Do not assume every hotel will make bookings before check-in, for non-guests or for venues with card guarantees.
When do restaurant reservations open?
There is no national rule. Restaurants may release a rolling interval, the next calendar month, selected seasonal dates or whatever inventory is currently loaded. Themed cafés may announce future batches in a News section. Fine-dining restaurants may accept a stated number of months ahead or expose a live calendar without promising a fixed pattern.
The correct workflow is:
- Select the exact branch and preferred meal date.
- Read its official reservation policy and latest notices.
- Record whether the rule is fixed, monthly, direct phone, drawing or variable.
- Add a reminder only if the provider publishes enough information.
- Keep a backup date and a different nearby restaurant.
| Experience | City | Method | Current verified rule | Difficulty | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Café | Tokyo | Variable availability | The café is reservation-only, but its official FAQ says release dates and covered dates may change and are announced in NEWS. | High | 4 August 2026 |
| Kirby Café | Tokyo | Variable availability | Reservations are prioritised online. The system changed for August 2026 visits and now requires an account; check the current monthly announcement. | High | 4 August 2026 |
| SÉZANNE | Tokyo | Variable availability | The official page provides reservation and inquiry channels but does not publish a stable opening window. | High | 4 August 2026 |
| Den | Tokyo | Fixed window | Telephone reservations open at 12:00 JST on the same date two months ahead, Monday to Saturday. DEN does not authorise online intermediaries. | High | 4 August 2026 |
| Kikunoi Honten | Kyoto | Variable availability | The official site offers reservations, but no stable public release interval was confirmed. | High | 4 August 2026 |
The table does not force a date onto variable calendars. That is intentional. Follow the Japan tickets release calendar for a cross-category view, but keep restaurant confirmation rules separate from attraction tickets.
Deposits, cancellation charges and no-shows
A card entry can be advance payment, a deposit, a guarantee or a temporary authorisation. Save the wording shown at checkout. Check the amount or percentage, the timezone of the cancellation deadline, how to make a change, and whether reducing the party size triggers a charge.
High-end restaurants buy ingredients and hold a small number of seats for each service. A late cancellation or no-show can therefore incur the full course price. Den publishes a full fixed-course charge for same-day cancellation or reducing diners. Another venue may use different timing and amounts; never copy that rule across restaurants.
If a plan changes, contact the restaurant through the exact official route. Do not simply fail to arrive. A phone call, My Page cancellation or authorised platform action leaves a clearer record and may release the table to another guest.
Keep the confirmation, cancellation policy and a screenshot or email showing the party size and deadline. Store the deadline in Japan time.
Language, allergies, children and accessibility
Communicate dietary restrictions before confirmation, not at the table. “Vegetarian”, “no meat”, an allergy and a preference are not interchangeable. List every ingredient that creates a medical risk and ask whether the restaurant can safely accept the booking. If the official page says requests cannot be accommodated—as SÉZANNE currently does—do not reserve and negotiate later.
An allergen list is not a promise to modify a dish. Pokémon Café publishes allergens but says menu items cannot be changed. Den says it will try to accommodate requests but cannot guarantee all needs. Those statements lead to different decisions.
Children also need venue-specific checks. A café may count babies toward party size; a formal restaurant may set a minimum age; another may allow children only in a private room. Confirm age, seat use, stroller storage and whether a child must order.
English availability varies. An English menu does not prove that phone booking, allergy discussion or service will be in English. Keep requests short, specific and written where possible.
Themed cafés and destination restaurants
Pokémon Café
Tokyo and Osaka use branch-specific official reservations. The current FAQ sets a 90-minute seating, detailed arrival rules, party-size restrictions and a no-modification policy for dishes. Last-minute cancellations may reappear, but a walk-in table is not guaranteed. Read the full Pokémon Café reservation guide.
Kirby Café
The current system for reservations from August 2026 requires an account and phone verification. Tokyo, Osaka and Hakata have separate capacity rules, the lead guest's ID is checked and the official session is 85 minutes. Transfers and resale are prohibited. See the Kirby Café guide.
Den
Den accepts only direct telephone reservations during its published hours and rejects online intermediaries. The fixed menu changes with daily ingredients, dietary requests are considered but not guaranteed, and confirmation arrives by email. Read the Den Tokyo guide.
SÉZANNE and Kikunoi
SÉZANNE publishes a smart-casual dress code, an age policy and a statement that dietary requests cannot be accommodated. Kikunoi operates several distinct branches and formats, so reserve Honten under its exact name. Use the SÉZANNE guide and Kikunoi Honten guide.
Practical etiquette that protects the booking
- Arrive at the stated time and use the correct branch entrance.
- Do not add diners without permission; small tables and prepared courses make this difficult.
- Call when delayed using the number in the confirmation.
- Respect dress guidance and fragrance requests when published.
- Ask before photographing staff, other guests or the kitchen.
- Do not transfer a named reservation when the policy prohibits it.
- Pay through the official channel and keep the receipt.
- Cancel promptly when you know you cannot attend.
Differences from Spain, Europe or the United States are matters of degree, not universal rules. More restaurants may use set menus, strict punctuality and full-course cancellation charges, but casual Japanese dining can remain very spontaneous. Do not turn one formal venue's policy into a cultural stereotype.
Add restaurant bookings to your Japan calendar
Combine the meal with attractions and transport, while keeping variable availability clearly marked as a live check.
Build my restaurant timelineFrequent restaurant-booking mistakes
- Reserving every dinner and losing neighbourhood flexibility.
- Treating a request email as confirmation.
- Using an unauthorised intermediary because the direct phone is busy.
- Mentioning an allergy only after arrival.
- Booking the wrong branch of a themed café or restaurant group.
- Ignoring that every baby or seat may count toward party size.
- Missing a cancellation deadline because it was interpreted in local rather than Japan time.
- Assuming a dress, age or payment policy from an old review.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need restaurant reservations everywhere in Japan?
No. Reserve destination meals, small counters and themed cafés that matter to you. Keep ordinary meals flexible with a neighbourhood shortlist.
Can a hotel concierge guarantee a table?
No. It can communicate with an accepting restaurant, but it cannot create inventory or override deposits and cancellation rules.
Are booking platforms safe?
Use a platform when the restaurant or hotel links or names it as authorised. Search visibility alone is not proof.
What if I cannot speak Japanese?
Look for an official online channel, concise bilingual communication or an eligible hotel concierge. Do not misrepresent dietary needs or confirmation.
What happens if I am late?
Policies differ. Some cafés cancel after a short grace period and do not extend the session. Contact the venue immediately using the confirmation details.
